'The Fire and the Quest 2': Cheltenham 2017!

FQ 2Clive Nolan and the Caamora Theatre Company will return to the Cheltenham Playhouse for the second edition of “The Fire and the Quest”! During the mini festival the audience will be able to see two of Clive’s musicals: ‘Alchemy’ and ‘King’s Ransom’, being the next adventure of Professor King and his companions.

Clive: “After the success of the Fire and the Quest 2015, I am happy to announce that the Fire and the Quest will return in 2017. This time round we will be performing ‘Alchemy’ followed by the debut production of ‘King’s Ransom’, which I hope we will also be recording for an official DVD release. Don’t wait to long to book your tickets!”

'The Fire and the Quest 2' will take place at the Cheltenham Playhouse at the very start of September 2017, and will be a similar format to the one we did in 2015.

Here is the schedule...
Friday 1st September - 'Alchemy' (directed by Ian Baldwin)
Saturday Afternoon 2nd September - 'Beyond the Veil' (the acoustic show)
Saturday evening 2nd September - debut of 'King's Ransom' (directed by Ian Baldwin)

There will also be some 'extra features' including 'The Victorian Seance' which will take place later on the Friday (where Ross Andrews will be taking us through some of the tricks of the trade that mediums used to use to 'perform' their communications with the spirit world (£15)). This should a lot of fun!

Also for some there will be an option to attend the final dress rehearsal (on Thursday August 31st) of 'King's Ransom' introduced by Clive - This will be a limited number. Please be aware that this rehearsal may consist of stops and starts, as well as the more noticeable presence of cameras and crew. Then there is of course the much enjoyed 'after-party' to round off the weekend.

More News of 'King's Ransom'!

Kings Ransom logo trimmed smallClive: "I’m pleased to say that ‘King’s Ransom’, my new musical will be released on ‘Verglas’ records! It has been the label for Arena for the last 20 years and I’m hoping some of that gold dust will rub off on this new show. King’s Ransom is set in the same ‘universe’ as ‘Alchemy’ and takes place about two years after those events. The characters of Professor King, William Gardelle and Eva Bonaduce are still with us, alongside a host of new and vibrant protagonists. The ‘book’, lyrics and most of the music is now written, and my guess is that recording will begin in October, with a release early next year. I will announce the cast and musicians shortly.

Meanwhile, here is the wonderful artwork that will be the principal image for 'King’s Ransom': this picture has been created by the excellent Mark Buckingham.

Like both the precious shows (‘She’ and ‘Alchemy’), this has been a major writing project for me, and it’s not over yet. Nevertheless, I look forward to recording 'King’s Ransom', and hearing all those fantastic musicians and singers do what they do best!
I’d like to thank all of you who have been supporting my musicals over these years. I hope you will enjoy what the future holds. The adventure continues…"

"It's only a little tour, but 'The Masquerade Overture' is 20 years old and we want every show to be a big celebration!", says Nick Barrett. Hope to see many of you out there and to have a chance to chat and enjoy the tour with you!"

Thank you, Cheltenham 2016!

SHE cast chelteClive: "Three more 'She' shows are completed, and I want to send my congratulations to everyone involved. It was a fantastic production which really brought the story to life. As I watched each show, I quite literally forgot I had written it, and got sucked into the adventure that unfolded before me.
This show has got better each time we have tackled it... from our original appearance on that Polish DVD all the way through to where we are now, I have seen this musical mature and develop into what I experienced last night, and thanks to all the people involved along the journey we now have a great show!

I could wax lyrical about each and everyone one of you... Mark Westwood tussling with his mixing desk like Spock trying to prevent the Enterprise computer from closing down... Iain David Richardson and tightly run 'prop regime'... Alec Morris bringing such great atmosphere with his lighting... Magdalena Grabias furiously spreading the word across the internet, and then diving into the foyer to force people to buy every piece of merchandise available... Dylan stepping up for stage manager...The amazing Natalie Barnett and Caron Morgan who managed to juggle babies and still have the scenery and costumes looking brilliant... The much welcomed nutritional support provided by Maggi Lewis... The chorus (Alexander White, Ethan Barnett, Ron Milsom, Colin Greene, Ollie West, Joy-Amy Wigman, Katie East and the 'dancy' Emily Frechter) offering such a wonderful variety of character and flavour... Verity Smith turning a 'handmaiden' into a fully formed central character.... Ross Andrews threading his high priest through the story, and gently manoeuvring people into the right places... Gemma Louise Edwards offering such a vibrant and sympathetic Ustane... the wonderful Chris Lewis and and the range that defies testicles... The romantic Robbie Gardner who can't wait to get undressed on stage... and then there is the star of the show, Victoria Bolley, who has truly grasped and owned the role of Ayesha - she may be little, but there was no doubt she had to be obeyed!

Health Battle Continues

Andre Prins 1After failure of two emergency retinal detachment surgeries, last Sunday Clive was forced to undergo another eye operation. He is now back home recovering from the most difficult one so far. Hopefully, this is the final stage of the procedure and we will soon see Maestro regain his health and return to his usual musical activities. Fingers crossed and we continue to send messages of support and wishes of swift recovery!

Clive: "It seems that fate is against me! I have been rushed back into hospital for a third emergency operation on the eye! It is clear that I was not free of the problem after all - it's not the disappointment that hurts, it's the hope! My state of mind is currently dwelling somewhere between depression and anger! So, it's back to the prison of the green wrist band and a semi twilight world. I'm sorry I wasted all your wonderful optimism and congratulatory messages, but like it or not I'm back to square one! The adventure/nightmare continues..."

Norwegian 'Alchemy' Artwork Designed!

Alchemy 20 smallA brand new Norwegian production of Clive's second musical, 'Alchemy' is being prepared for a series of shows to be performed in May 2017. With the majority of the roles cast and regular rehearsals being held, Caamora Norway project is developing at a fast pace. The artwork for "Alchemy", designed by a renown Norwegian artist, Kirsten Knoph Viita, is the latest addition to the carefully drawn production plan leading up to the shows.

Clive: "I am very pleased with the way things are going with Caamora Norway, and the icing on the cake is the new artwork for the shows in May next year. Bright and colourful, which makes an excellent contrast to the official UK poster. This will end up as posters, adverts, T-shirts and much more. I definitely want a T-shirt! :-)
‘Alchemy’ in Norway… coming soon!!"

A big thank you to Kirsten Knoph Viita for designing the artwork and to Stig Andre Clason for creating its digital version.

Each time it is performed, it develops a little more, and I am happy to see how this show has matured over the years. I look forward to the continued ‘future’ of ‘She’.

Clive Thanks Fans After His Eye Surgery

Clive Thanks fansClive had to undergo an emergency eye operation due to a detached retina. The operation is believed to have been successful, but the final results will be unknown for at least a month. Clive is currently taking a compulsory recovery break.

Here's to a swift and thorough recovery, Mr. Nolan!

Clive: "I found myself in the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading, where a couple of surgeons did what they had to. It was decided it should be 'local anaesthetic' so that turned out to be a long 70 minutes which I won't describe right now! They believe the operation went well, but the results will be unknown for a while yet. I would be lying if I said this wasn't freaking me out, but I am strengthened by the kind thoughts you have sent me. I just wanted to thank you all for such great messages of support! It made a big difference to my frame of mind. I will do my best to be a 'patient patient', and look forward to annoying you with my music just as soon as I can!"

New Horizons for the Musicals

New waysClive: “It is with both excitement and sadness that I announce the parting of ways with Metal Mind regarding the future musicals. It’s time to see if we can reach out to new audiences and perhaps take the new shows down some slightly different pathways. Metal Mind continues to be a company I love working with, and they will still be marketing ‘She’ and ‘Alchemy’ (amongst many other things). Their support has always been a great part of what I do and I hope we will still be working together on new ideas along the way.

A change like this certainly comes with consequences, many of which will become clear over the next few months, but having written most of ‘King’s Ransom’ as well as making great progress on ‘Dark Fables’, I look forward to seeing where we can take these shows next! I have always considered the followers of my musicals to be a loyal and enthusiastic community, and I dearly wish this will both continue and grow. There are some thrilling developments ahead, which will definitely require your support, but with a fair wind behind us, perhaps we can take the shows to new heights! So, never was Professor King more right… ‘It seems our work is not yet done!’ “

‘Beyond the Veil’ Acoustic Show DVD Pre Sale!

Beyond the veil small for fbWe are going to release an ‘official bootleg’ DVD of the acoustic show recorded during the ‘Fire and the Quest’ weekend in September 2015, celebrating 10 years of Clive Nolan Musicals. This show features a wide variety of Clive’s material performed by a stellar cast of singers and musicians. Clive plays piano, sings and entertains alongside artists including Christina Booth, Alan Reed, Paul Manzi, Chris Lewis, Paul Scott, Agnieszka Swita, Victoria Bolley, Gemma Louise Edwards, Verity Smith, as well as the instrumental talents of Mark Westwood, Scott Higham and Kylan Amos.

The cost of the DVD package (full colour cover and 2 DVDs) is £15 and it is now available for pre-order in our ONLINE SHOP! The profits raised from this project will go towards the making of Clive’s new musical ‘King’s Ransom’. ‘Beyond the Veil’ will be dispatched in August (at the latest).

Clive: “I hope this DVD will provide a wonderful memento of that terrific Saturday afternoon concert. I have compiled and edited the show in its entirety, ‘warts and all’, so please be aware there is a lot of chatting and story telling (you can get straight to the songs with the chapter selections). It also needs to be remembered that, sadly, the sound quality is limited because we only had the audio recorded on camera. It was a lot of fun doing this gig, and I really enjoyed working with all these excellent performers. With the challenges I now face to record the new musical, ‘King’s Ransom’, every sale of this DVD will be a welcome contribution to the cause… Enjoy the show, and thanks in advance!”

"The Fire and the Quest": We Did It!

FQ Cast NEIL'The Fire and the Quest' festival celebrating 10 years of Clive Nolan Musicals took place on September 4th and 5th, 2015. The artists of the Caamora Theatre Company performed three shows in front of the sold out venue of the Playhouse Theatre in Cheltenham, UK. Clive’s jubilee was commenced with the premiere of a brand new production of his first musical, 'She', followed by the off-West End version of 'Alchemy', both directed by Ian Baldwin. Saturday acoustic concert, hosted by Clive himself and featuring, among others, some of the original performers from both musicals, gave a chance to reminisce about the past 10 years of Clive’s musical journey. The event was a great success and fun for performers and the audience alike.

Clive: "There is no doubt that ‘The Fire and the Quest’ weekend is over, and what a fantastic weekend it was! The plethora of terrific performances, the culmination of such brilliant work and preparation, and of course the wonderful reaction of the lovely people who travelled from the corners of the world to see us in action. It’s the audience that really makes a show, and guys… you made it! I felt proud, moved and excited all in one heady mixture! This was truly a lifetime highlight!"

'King's Ransom' is Written!

Kings Ransom finishedClive: "Well, that's it! My new musical 'King's Ransom' is now written!! I managed to write this one in less than two years (despite the eye problems), which is excellent. This show is epic on all sorts of levels and features some great new characters as well as some old favourites! There's political intrigue, love, hate, action, despair, hope and a little magic all thrown into the mix.

I will spend a month or so adjusting and developing the instrumentation and orchestrations, and if all goes well, recording can begin in September.
Stand fast, and set your compass straight... King is coming back!"

Alchemy NorwayClive: “I am very happy to announce the beginning of a brand new project - 'Caamora Norway'! Over the next year we will be building up to several full concert performances of 'Alchemy', featuring a brand new cast and new musicians... mostly from Norway. This is going to be an exciting and rewarding challenge which will culminate in May next year, and I wish everyone involved the very best of luck. I will, of course, still be involved, but the real pressure is on the guys out there, and I am absolutely sure they will produce something excellent! Special mention must go to Morten Clason (Captain of the ship), Ingar Diskerud (tussling with the finances) and Are Høidal (providing the chorus and many other sources). Over the course of the next days, weeks and months we will keep you informed as to the cast, the musicians and the overall production.. where to buy tickets... merchandise etc etc.
So.. you lovely band of Vikings... there is still work to be done!”

I Like Writing Musicals: A Conversation with Clive Part 2

Int part 1 2Clive: "As far as the characters I played are concerned, there was a practical reason... When I started writing the songs I was cheaper than anybody else around, so it made some kind of sense that I played Leo initially in "She". But I never felt any affinity for that particular role - it didn't really suit me. But when I wrote the story of "Alchemy", I was very aware that the character of King would suit me more. So that was a much easier decision to make. These two characters are the two that I actually sang. Obviously I sing a lot of the background chorus as well and when I do the demos, I sing a lot of the material even if it becomes somebody else's part later on".

Two New Musicals this year!

cn new musClive: "As I announced at “The Fire and the Quest” weekend, it is my intention to write and record two musicals this year. This will be a mammoth undertaking, but it’s high time I moved on to new adventures! The first, provisionally entitled “Dark Fables”, will be a modern tale based around music I have written over the last 25 years.

My original concept will be developed by director Ian Baldwin, whose exceptional creative talent will ensure a tantalizing story. This show, for rock band and five singers, will be designed so that we can take it out on tour. In addition to the stage set there will also be interactive video material featuring numerous special guests.

The second show, which will be titled “King’s Ransom”, will be set in the “Alchemy universe”. It will feature Professor King, Eva and William, alongside exciting new characters and a brand new adventure. This story takes place two years after the events of “Alchemy”, and explores the underworld of Victorian London with a big dose of romance, intrigue and adventure. I have already written about half of the musical material and the storyline is complete, which means that most of the characters have been cast and I can already see the makings of a thrilling new show!

It is my intention for the writing of both of these productions to be completed later this year and recording to begin immediately after that. I would like to think that 2017 will witness the release of CDs and DVDs as well as launching new theatrical and concert performances of the shows. Nevertheless, I do intend to preview some of the new material in certain events this year. I’m very excited by the prospect of these new challenges and look forward to working again with all the talented singers, musicians, artists and technicians who will help me bring these stories to life.

As Professor King said… ‘Now there is a promise made!’"

I Like Writing Musicals: A Conversation with Clive Nolan Part 1

Int part 1 3Clive: "When I was a child my parents had a radiogram. You were pulling the little doors open and there was room for albums on the sides and the record deck in the middle. Being an only child I used to have a lot of time on my own and I used to go through these records. We had a collection of albums like "South Pacific", "My Fair Lady", "The Sound of Music". At that time I did not really think consciously about the genre - I just used to listen to these albums all the time and make up my own stories, cause they did not have proper sleeves. So, I had to imagine what was going on in the story. Thus from a very early age I was listening to that kind of music and my parents used to take me to see some of the musicals in the cinema. I remember being taken to see "Oliver!" and "Scrooge the Musical" and various other ones as well. So, I was brought up on a diet of musicals to some extent."
